KAKADU CROCODILE

I am a Saltwater or Estuarine crocodile. I am a giant reptile with a long tail, broad nose and very sharp teeth! I can grow to more than 5 metres in length.

I live in the rivers, swamps, mangroves and billabongs of Kakadu, especially those close to the coast.

I am a cold-blooded animal and I like to bask in the sun to keep warm. When I get too hot I lie in the shade, go into the water or open my mouth to cool myself down.

I am the biggest carnivore (meat-eating) animal in Kakadu and I like to eat large fish and other animals. Sometimes, when I'm really hungry, I will attack large animals such as dogs, buffaloes and even boats if they get too close!

I lay my eggs in nests made on the banks of rivers and swamps. I make the nests from soil and plants. If it is hot in the nest, most of my eggs will hatch as boy crocodiles. If the nest is cooler, the eggs will hatch as girl crocodiles.

Look at the pictures below and see if you can work out which crocodile is me (the Saltwater crocodile) and which one is my cousin (the Freshwater crocodile).
