KAKADU'S JABIRU STORK

I am a Jabiru or Black-necked stork, and I am Australia's only stork.

I eat fish, eels, snakes and frogs (if I can get them!) I have very long legs and a long neck so I can wade in water to catch them.

I live in warm and tropical environments around wetlands such as those found in Kakadu National Park. I also live in grassland areas where there are swamps and rivers.

My feathers are glossy black and white. Female Jabirus have yellow eyes and males have black eyes.

I roost (rest) in the ground among the plants in wetland areas. I have to be well hidden in case a crocodile catches me while I sleep.

I rest in the top of tall trees with good views in all directions. My nest is huge and made of long, thin twigs. It is lined with dry grass to make it cosy for my chicks.

My chicks have brown and creamy white feathers. My mate and I keep our eggs warm and feed our chicks after they have hatched.

I am a creature of habit and I don't like my fragile wetland home to be disturbed.

Now you know some more about me, look at my picture and try and work out if I am a male or female Jabiru.
