Glossary

Saltwater - living in water which is very salty. Found in the ocean, in part of rivers which run into the ocean (estuarine), and in salt lakes.

Freshwater - living in water which is fresh, not salty. Found in rivers and lakes.

Swamp - a low-lying area with very wet ground.

Mangroves - a tree which grows at the sea shore with its roots in a tangle above the ground.

Billabong - a still pool of water.

Cold-blooded - having blood that changes temperature according to the surroundings eg. gets warmer in the sun, cooler in shade.

Reptile - a cold-blooded animal that creeps or crawls eg. snake, lizard, crocodile, tortoise.

Carnivore - an animal that eats meat.

Roost - the place where a bird nests.

Nest - a warm place where animals lay their eggs or keep their babies.

Amphibians - animals able to live and move both on land and in water.

Mammals - any animal of which the female can feed her babies with her own milk.

Brolgas - a large crane-like bird who’s ground movements resemble a dance.
